Zoomorphic vessels

Zoomorphic vessel with incised decoration; Late Neolithic II. One category of ceramic vessel that occurs is a small shallow bowl that stands on four legs shaped like animal feet and also has a head-shaped appendage. The general appearance is thus of a quadruped carrying a container on its back. Decorated using the same techniques as other contemporary vessels (black on red, graphite painted, and/or incision), these objects are a cross between vases and figurines ; Fragments of these vessels are therefore, unsurprisingly, often confused with the former (rim or side fragments) or the latter (legs, head). Simple small vessels with legs (more commonly three than four) already existed in this region during the Late Neolithic I, although they are very rare in Dikili Tash, but fusing these with the animal figurines is an original feature of the Late Neolithic II.
