Black-on-Red

Collared cup with black-on-red decoration, Late Neolithic II (4600-4400 BC). Neutron activation analysis conducted in the Laboratory of Archaeometry Demokritos in Athens has shown that ceramics with black on red painted decoration from Eastern Macedonia, that are characteristic of the Late Neolithic II levels, were produced in a limited number of “workshops”, each using different raw materials and recipes. 200 samples were analysed from c.15 sites and they fall into four groups with distinct chemical compositions. Each group represents a cluster of sites that are geographically close to one another. One of these “workshops” likely existed near Dikili Tash, as suggested by the presence in the settlement of vessels made from a particular fabric that is not attested elsewhere, but the clay source used by the Dikili Tash potters has not been located, either because it has since been exhausted or is no longer accessible.
