Lamps

Lamp fragment; Late Neolithic I (c. 4900 BC).Late Neolithic I lamp (c. 4900 BC): drawing and reconstruction. A singular category of vessels occurs in the Late Neolithic I layers at Dikili Tash. This is a roughly circular small bowl that stands on a short pedestal with two or four diametrically opposed holes and has a flat vertical handle with a hole in the centre. It is decorated using a complex combination of materials and techniques (a coating on both internal and external surfaces, filled incisions, and the painting of the remaining areas with a different colour). These decorations are unfortunately often badly preserved and thus difficult to assess. Only two other sites in the same geographical area, Sitagroi and Promachon/Topolnitsa, have so far recovered this kind of vase; they therefore appear to be local products. There are several indications that these vases could be incense burners or lamps. This hypothesis fits well with the recent results of residue analysis , which identified remains of animal fat on the inner surface.
Other types of ceramics, as well as some stone vases, could have served similar purposes.
