Rings

Rings made from spondylus shell. The rings have a circular or semi-circular shape and are usually made of shells Spondylus Gaedoropus whose centre has been removed. The manufacturing sequence (chaîne opératoire) had three stages: (a) abrasion of the ventral end of the valve, to create a central hole, (b) enlargement of the hole up to the desired size, and (c) grinding with light abrasion. The technical investment is important, since it would take approximately ten hours to manufacture a ring and it could easily have broken at any time. The use of these objects is not clear. Their placement inside graves suggests that they might have been used as bracelets, but the small size of some of them suggests that they could have been sewn on textiles instead of being worn.
