House construction techniques in the late bronze age
The technique of building walls out of mud bricks on stone foundations is well documented in several sites of Macedonia during this period (Angista, Toumba, Assiros, Kastanas), but the presence of very thick layers of clay plaster between the rows of bricks is difficult to explain. In Assiros, where the phenomenon has also been observed, it is combined with wooden posts in the masonry. This arrangement meant that the rows of bricks did not actually support the weight of the superstructure and could thus be replaced by layers of clay plaster.
