Early Bronze Age clay tools

Clay spindle whorl (top view); Early Bronze Age. In the Early Bronze Age many categories of clay tools that were in use during the Neolithic disappear. As with the pottery, the most heavily-decorated and elaborate items are abandoned first: for example, spoons, stamps, and spindle whorls with complex incised decoration. The « slings-bullets » also disappear, but we still find loom weights that are similar to those of Late Neolithic. Perforated sherds and simple spindle whorls also continue to exist, but their shapes are altogether different from those of the Neolithic. These changes in morphology (disappearance of flat-bent whorls and a predominance of biconical ones) could reflect differences in function: indeed, we believe that the whorls of this period are better suited for the spinning of flax.
