Late bronze age stone tools

Late Bronze Age flint blade: the dotted line indicates its axis of insertion in a “tribulum”.
Lithics analysis detected traces of use on several chipped stone tools found in LBA layers. Some of them seem to have been used to cut non-woody plants. Of special interest are two blades used for processing grain: the traces observed on them are similar to those observed on blades from “tribula” (= threshing sledges), known both from archaeological (e.g., in the Middle East) and ethnographic examples. Threshing sledges are wooden devices with stone blades inserted underneath, which are used after the harvest for the threshing of grains and the cutting of straw. The two blades from Dikili Tash were obviously fixed obliquely and had received secondary treatment (“retouche”), presumably to renew their edge. This is the first evidence of the use of “tribula” during the Bronze Age in the Aegean.

Late Bronze Age flint blade: the dotted lines (top, left) indicate its axis of insertion in the “tribulum”. Details of the cutting edge are shown in the bottom pictures, taken under a microscope (x 100): black arrows show grooves parallel to the blade’s movement, whereas white arrows show comet-shaped flakings which are characteristic for these tools.
