Modern times: the recent years

After the annexation of Macedonia by Greece, the road linking Kavala and Drama (which coincided largely with the Roman Via Egnatia) went through the middle of the plain between Amygdaleonas and Krinides (formerly the village Rakça).

In 1923-1924, the Turkish population that lived here was replaced by Greeks from eastern Thrace following an exchange of populations between Greece and Turkey. The marsh was drained between 1931 and 1940, reclaiming large areas for cultivation. Tobacco became the dominant cash-crop of the region.

After World War II, a large proportion of the working population emigrated, mostly to Germany, but this trend reversed after 1974. Tobacco cultivation was replaced by corn.

The water-mill of Dikili Tash fell out of use in 1961, the year that the first systematic excavations began at the site. Krinides began spreading eastwards in the late 1980s and is now almost adjacent to Dikili Tash. The spring which lies close to the settlement now supplies drinking water to the small town, which became the seat of the Municipality of Philippi in 1998. In 2010, as part of the overall reform of the local and regional administration, Philippi was incorporated into the Municipality of Kavala.

The Dikili Tash tell in the outskirts of modern Krinides (2008).
