A complex decorative pottery technique of the Late Bronze Age

Fragment of a hand-made closed vessel, decorated with incisions filled with white material; end of Late Bronze Age (1300-1200 BC). Bands filled with irregular incisions were executed first, creating rough areas on the vessel’s surface, and then the zones without incisions were covered with a graphite coating. After firing, a yellowish or pink-colored paste was applied (possibly with the help of an organic binder) that covered the irregular incisions, whose purpose was actually to facilitate adherence, i.e. to allow fixing the color pastes. These lively colors contrasted with the shine of the grey-black graphite zones.
